A seven-month old girl died due to H1N1-related complications at Byculla’s Noor Hospital on Tuesday, taking the toll in the city to three.
The civic body, however, declared her death as the “city’s second fatality”.
They are not counting Syeda Dorjiwala (63) who died at Noor Hospital on August 11 as her throat swab report which confirmed that she had swine flu came after her death.
The girl, Modia Mohammad Shaikh, was admitted to Noor Hospital on August 14. Her throat swab sample was sent to Haffkine Institute the same day and the report was received two days later.
“She was H1N1 positive so we put her on Tamiflu immediately. But she died at 12.30 am on Tuesday,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar. Shaikh had developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and viral broncho-pneumonia due to H1N1 and that resulted in her death.
Her family has been put on Tamiflu. Doctors at Noor Hospital declined comment.

“She was transferred to Kasturba Hospital on Sunday evening as she was approaching her due date and Siddharth Hospital, where she was admitted, did not have enough facilities,” said Mhaiskar.
Ninety-nine new cases were reported across the country taking the tally to 2,026.
