Separate groups of four and eight mountaineers from Moscow and Kiev were caught by bad weather while ascending the twin-peaked mountain on May 8.

One climber managed to reach a rescue party despite severe frostbite and four were still unaccounted for, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

At 5,642 metres, Elbrus is considered Europe's highest mountain. It is located in Russia's western Caucasus mountains near the border with Georgia.
