In 2003, when Mayawati was chief minister, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) gave a techno-feasibility clearance to the project.

In January 2006, the prime minister came to Noida and termed the demand for an airport legitimate aspiration of the residents and assured that he would pursue the project. The visit of a central aviation ministry team to assess the project in April 2011 had revived the hopes.

Local MP Surendra Singh Nagar raised a question on Jewar airport in Lok Sabha in 2008. In reply, then minister of state (independent charge) for civil aviation, Praful Patel, gave in principle approval for setting up of the project. L&T Ramball prepared the project report in 2000. Survey of the area was done through satellite pictures and physical inspection. An environmental impact study was also undertaken.
