But it is due to Hyderabad District Collector G. Jayalakshmio’s help that Dasari Pradeep Kumar, a cobbler’s son, will be able to fulfil his dream of studying in IIT-Chennai.

Pradeep Kumar stood 374th in the IIT entrance examination this year.

Several individuals and organisations, besides the district administration, have come forward to help Pradeep Kumar as his father, whose average earning in a day is around Rs 150, is unable to pay for his academic expenses.

G. Jayalakshmio, besides giving Rs 13,000 as initial help, has opened an account in State Bank of India’s (SBI) Eluru branch to facilitate all those willing to help the boy. Donors can send their contributions by cheque or DD in favour “Collector-IIT Merit Assistance” drawn in SBI, Eluru.

When the IIT entrance results were out, Pradeep Kumar and his parents, Dasari Madhavi and David Raju, were thrilled.

But the joy did not last long as the family woke up to the hard reality that they did not have money to pay for the initial expenses like travel to Chennai and buy books.
