ABACUS genii are out of the bottle!

SHREYA MEHROTRA of Loreto Convent emerged victorious in the first-ever UP State ABACUS & Mental Arithmetic Competition held here at the Peter Fanthome Auditorium on Sunday. She was followed by Yash Raj of Versatile Scholars and Ayusha Mehrotra of La Martiniere Girls? College. Manav Agarwal of Shilling House School (Kanpur) topped in the second group while Agra?s Sakshi Agarwal and NS Srikant of Noida stood first and second runners-up, respectively.

She was followed by Yash Raj of Versatile Scholars and Ayusha Mehrotra of La Martiniere Girls’ College. Manav Agarwal of Shilling House School (Kanpur) topped in the second group while Agra’s Sakshi Agarwal and NS Srikant of Noida stood first and second runners-up, respectively.

The event was organised by the State Unit of the UCMAS Mental Arithmetic (India) Limited. While inaugurating the event, Sunita Gandhi of City Montessori School hailed the ABACUS Education System, and described it as one of the best methods to help a student solve his or her arithmetic problem within seconds.

“I find this method quite easy and best for the young students, as this is the time when school going children need easiest system to learn arithmetic.” While hailing the efforts of the organisers, Gandhi emphasised the need of adopting this system in every school in the country.

With over 1200 students already registered with UCMAS at its 30 centres across cities in UP, the State Competition witnessed around 400 young participants between 4-12 years representing cities like Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Bulandsahar, Greater Noida, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Kanpur, Noida, Saharanpur, Sitapur, Varanasi and hosts Lucknow.

UCMAS General Manager (Schools Division) Rajeev Kakkar claimed it was a modern representation of ancient art of mental mathematics that originated in China. “The programmes are designed in such a fashion that enhances photographic memory, listening skills, concentration, comprehension, presentation, imagination, creativity, speed accuracy, self-reliance and self-confidence.”

Another UCMAS director Nafis Ahmed Khan said, “ABACUS Education System is a universally used manual gadget for solving arithmetic functions. It is meant for 4-12 age group children, when mental development is at its peak. It is able to improve the calculation ability of a students in a very short period and enhances interest, feeling, motive, personality and determination of the student. UCMAS programs help a child discover the potential within.”

The entire competition was divided into seven different categories and aimed to select a winner, 3 runners-up and a couple of consolations to be the part of UCMAS team to represent UP in the national competition. National winners then will take part at the international UCMAS competition.
