The new radio cab scheme launched by the Haryana Transport Department in May this year had got good response and 11 operators had shown interest to ply 815 cabs in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Panchkula. As many as seven operators had submitted applications for grant of permits to ply 490 cabs of economy, luxury and super luxury categories in Gurgaon.

The department now plans to grant contract carriage permits to the operators.

The facility is likely to be available in Gurgaon by September end.

“As there are three categories of radio cabs, we have decided that the tariff would be R10, R20 and R30 per kilometre for economy, luxury and super luxury vehicles respectively,” said Dharmender Singh, secretary, road transport authority (RTA).

The cabs, which will be fitted with a GPS (global positioning system) device, will operate within 50 kilometres of Gurgaon. They will be available round the clock and provide better connectivity in NCR.

With these cabs commuting on the city roads will be easier as the public transport system has been an issue of concern. Though there are some cabs plying on the roads, their rates and limited number make it difficult to use for most of
residents.
