After 47 days of tumultuous protests and shutdowns over the rape and murder of two of its young women, Shopian, 50 km south of Srinagar, finally lifted its strike on Thursday.
Traders and businessmen said Shopian, known for its fresh fruits, particularly cherries, had lost about Rs 500 crore due to the strike.
The strike was suspended the day after four policemen were arrested on the orders of the J&K High Court for allegedly destroying evidence in the case.
Shopian had shut down since May 30 after the bodies of Nelofar Jan (23) and her sister-in-law Asiya Jan (17) were found in a canal outside the town.
In Srinagar, hundreds of agitated residents of Budgam district (pic above) in central Kashmir descended at Lal Chowk to demand that the government take action to locate Zahoor Ahmed Mir (25), missing in Delhi since July 7. Mir was working in the Capital for eight months.
