After the carrot, the stick... Pakistan, which announced a package of incentives for officials posted in Balochistan, has now said that those who refuse to serve in the troubled province would be penalised.
The Daily Times said that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had also approved the recommendation of the Establishment Division that officials of the All Pakistan Unified Group should face disciplinary action if they refuse to serve in Balochistan.
It quoted sources said that the government had decided that a refusal to serve in Balochistan might lead to suspension of the official, a departmental inquiry and demotion.
The Establishment Division has also recommended they be made officers on special duty for a certain duration.
Twenty-five officials who had refused to serve in Balochistan were subsequently transferred to the province last month.
They had said they would not serve in Balochistan because "there is hatred against the centre and non-Baloch in the province".
According to the incentive package, every official sent to Balochistan would be promoted under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act 1973 with an increase in salary and perks attached to the post, provided there were vacancies.

The departments concerned and the Balochistan government would provide free air ticket to these officials and their families from Quetta to all air-linked cities of the country twice a year.
