ELECTIONS IN colleges and universities will not be the same any more. On Friday, the Supreme Court accepted the report of the J.M. Lyngdoh Committee on students' union elections.
The panel has made elaborate recommendations including yearly elections, a ban on political donations, a ceiling of Rs 5,000 on poll expenses, a ban on printed posters and banners, a 28-year age bar for candidates and completing the poll process in 10 days.
Candidates should be full-time students without any criminal record or academic arrears and they would be allowed to contest only once for the post of an office-bearer and twice for the post of an executive member, the committee said.
The Supreme Court directed the Centre, states and Union territories to implement the recommendations forthwith as an interim measure.
