What is your take on the Amboli murder case, where two youngsters who reportedly stood up to men who sexually harassed one of their friends, were murdered?
It only reflects people’s non-participation in our law and order, and criminal justice system. Everybody is either scared of or indifferent to such things happening around him. This, in a city like Mumbai, which has a reputation of acting with reason in times of crisis. Yet, when events like these unfold, it becomes a matter of shame and disgrace.
How do you see the case legally? Should a person accused of such a crime be given the harshest of sentences?
I agree with the chief minister when he says that the guilty must be hanged. For this to happen, the investigating agency must prepare a watertight case, and the police and the prosecution should do their job efficiently. A strict punishment, meted out without inordinate delay, will act as a deterrent to offenders, and bring relief for the victims.
Eve-teasing, or sexual harassment, has become a problem that women face everywhere – when travelling on a suburban train or walking down a street. What measures should be taken to curb this menace?
Eve-teasing has become a perpetual menace, and it has become necessary for society to suggest ways to eliminate this menace. It’s time that laws related to eve-teasing be made more effective. There is nothing wrong if sections 354 and 509 are made non-bailable.
