Accusing AIADMK of 'playing dirty politics', Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudi on Thursday alleged that the party's charge that women members were not protected in the Assembly, was intended to provide an excuse for its leader Jayalalitha to abstain from Assembly proceedings.

Opposing the no confidence motion against Speaker R Avudaiappan, the DMK minister alleged that AIADMK, under the leadership of Jayalalitha, had a history of 'playing dirty politics'.

"After allowing Jayalalitha to speak for more than two hours in the Assembly on July 31, she had charged that there were several interventions. She has planned to abstain from Assembly proceedings. The issue raised by AIADMK on Thursday was a drama to provide an excuse for Jayalalitha", he said.

Congress member Peter Alphonse said the AIADMK had converted the Assembly proceedings into a farce. "They moved a no confidence motion saying there was no protection for women members in the House and had walked out without voting on it. They are betraying people for political gains", he said.

Anglo-Indian representative Oscar Nigli said "minorities were living in fear during the AIADMK rule. Now we are secure. Those who know only autocracy and do not know what is democracy are talking about democracy now".
