In a suicide note addressed to the police, Jairaj Datta, a resident of Gopal Govardhan Towers, asked them not to trouble his family about his death.

“Jairaj did not leave any note for his wife or son. I was shocked to see a note with my name on it,” said Senior Inspector Surendrakumar Jaiswal, of the Kandivli police station.

As the letter was scribbled in Gujarati, the police could understand only a few sentences. They have sought help from experts to read the rest of the letter, Jaiswal said.

Jairaj is survived by his wife Manjula (69), son Kamlesh and three daughters.

“The couple earlier lived with Kamlesh on the second floor of a nearby building,” Jaiswal said. “Since Jairaj had trouble climbing the stairs, Kamlesh bought them a house in the towers.

“The letter says that he [Jairaj] knew that committing suicide was a crime but this was the best way for him as he could no longer bear the back pain,” he said. “It also said that he did not have any complaints against anybody. Manjula told us that Jairaj used to say that his days were up and that God could call him any moment.”
