Accused of a “definite tilt towards a particular sect” in its action and policy, the Akhilesh Yadav government was Tuesday given two weeks by the Allahabad high court to furnish details of all major riots during his tenure.

The Samajwadi Party government is under fire over the recent riots in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts.

The Lucknow bench order came on a PIL seeking direction for a CBI inquiry into all major riots in the state after the Samajwadi Party came to power in March 2012.

In her public interest litigation (PIL), activist Nutan Thakur alleged that in all the communal clashes in the past 18 months, the administration shied away from taking action against the culprits of “a particular sect”, and that this “resulted in a sense of mistrust in members of the other community, including the petitioner”. The petitioner also demanded that a sitting high court judge be inducted into the one-man Justice Vishnu Sahai Commission, set up by the state government to probe the Muzaffarnagar clashes.
