All sportsmen, barring cricketers, are just pawns

Congratulations to Viswanathan Anand for defeating Veselin Topalov and retaining his World Chess Championship title (Anand retains world title, May 12). It's disappointing that the media don’t give talented and successful sportsmen like Anand don’t get their due from the media till they win a prestigious tournament.

It's disappointing that the media don’t give talented and successful sportsmen like Anand don’t get their due from the media till they win a prestigious tournament. For months now, cricket is the only sport that the media’s obsessed with. Team India’s shameful exit from the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies, too, hasn’t stopped news channels from ‘wasting’ their airtime on cricketers.

With reference to the editorial No place for parallel courts (Our Take, May 12), support to the regressive policies of khap panchayats from some young and educated Congress leaders shows that even education doesn’t help change an individual’s attitude towards social stereotypes. It is a matter of concern that these MPs are misguiding people. Honour killings have no place in 21st century India. Our elected representatives should refrain from supporting khap panchayats on this issue.
