Allow international monitors, Tibetans ask Beijing

The Tibetan government-in-exile seek int'l monitors in Lhasa to probe the allegation of Tibetan resorting to "terrorist" activities.

The Tibetan government-in-exile has dismissed Chinese allegations that people inside Tibet had been resorting to "terrorist" activities and asked Beijing to allow international monitors in Lhasa to probe the matter.

It demanded immediate dispatch of independent fact finding delegations, access to free press, end to brutal killings,
release of imprisoned Tibetans and immediate medical assistance to injured Tibetans.

Pointing out that the claims by the Chinese government were based on weapons found inside Tibetan monasteries, the government-in-exile said that the arms were offerings made by Tibetans as a symbol of rejecting violence.

"Their alleged claim is based on weapons they have found in Tibetan monasteries. However, these weapons are offerings made by Tibetans to monasteries, as a symbol of rejecting violence," according to a statement issued by the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Why did the Tibetans not use these weapons in their recent non-violent protest against the Chinese government, it asked.

"If the Chinese government has genuine belief and confidence in its claims, then it should not hesitate to let international monitoring groups and journalists to visit Tibet, so as to conduct free and fair investigations into the matter," the statement said.
