THERE IS good news for the cultivators of herbal plant aloe vera as recent researches have revealed that this medicinal plant is useful in the treatment of radiation born disorders.

Talks of some eminent scientists during the three-day international conference on Radiation Biology held in BHU suggests that Aloe Vera treatment reduces the radiation induced sickness and mortality as also this plant can be useful in preventing of Gamma ray skin damages.
The lecture of Dr. MR Saini, faculty member at Radiation and Cancer Biology Laboratory, Zoology Department, Rajasthan University, suggests that Aloe Vera treatment reduces the radiation induced sickness and mortality. The lecture was based on an experiment in which radioactive protective potential of ethanolic leaf extract of Aloe Vera was studied in mice after oral administration for 15 consecutive days prior to being exposed to gamma radiation.
The lecture said that Aloe treatment before irradiation with different doses of gamma rays delayed the radiation sickness as well as reducing the duration and severity of radiation sickness as evidenced by a lesser decrease in body weight in comparison to untreated animals.
Treatment of mice with Aloe also reduced the 30 days mortality and thereby increase the percentage of survivors in comparison to those irradiated but not received Aloe’, the experts said who also added that `these results indicates that Aloe treatment protected the mice against gastrointestinal as well as bone marrow deaths, which was evidenced by higher percentage of survivors on day 10 or 30’.
According to British Pharmacopoeia, a medical journal, the most effective and active substances of the Aloe Vera are Barbaloin and Aloin, which are best recommended for cancer radiotherapy treatment.
In another lecture by Dr. S. Saber of the Pulmonary Department at Shariaty Hospital in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (Iran), the doctor said that Aloe Gel application was useful in preventing of gamma-ray skin damages. Prof Saber further stated that there was extensive information about Aloe plant and its good effect on treatment of burns, wounds healing, anti-inflammation and sunburn caused due to gamma-rays thus making this plant a boon for the modern day medicine.
