"Huge boulders and stones hit the shrine vicinity on Monday evening killing a woman pilgrim on the spot," said a senior police officer in Srinagar.

The injured were evacuated to hospital, where doctors have described the condition of four of them as serious. The officer said: "The (recent) rains have loosened the rocks, which hurtled down the mountain near the shrine.

"The weather has improved over the past two days. We expect over 400,000 pilgrims from across India," said the official.
