The Gujarat police are in a mess thanks to chief minister Narendra Modi’s key aide Amit Shah. Some officers are in jail over encounter cases, others are battling the state to get their dues. And it was Modi who had been paying for it.

Once Shah’s blue-eyed boy, jailed police officer DG Vanzara has blown the whistle on him long and hard. And officers in the force privately agree with him.

“He rewarded officers like Vanzara, Abhay Chudasama, and GL Singhal with key postings and they executed fake encounters. On the other hand, he sidelined outstanding officials like Rahul Sharma, Rajnish Rai, Satish Verma,” said a retired IPS officer.

Currently, five IPS officers are in jail in fake encounter cases, one is out on bail, two former IPS officers and one additional DG are chargesheeted. Half-a-dozen IPS officers have approached the central administrative tribunal.

“Shah created a crisis of confidence among senior officers and the government. That destroyed the command and control mechanism of Gujarat police,” Vanzara wrote. “This man (Shah) has single handedly destroyed the state police cadre,” said former IPS Rajen Priyadarshi.
