With Jammu and Kashmir experiencing heavy snowfall since December 31, the Valley’s favourite pastime of making snowmen has become a rage online. Hundreds of residents in the Valley have flooded social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter with home-made, street-side, lane-side, lake-side and in-orchards sculptures made of snow.
"Kashmir has never before been captured with such diverse and enchanting beauty as this winter. The people’s artistic genius has again been revealed," said Arjimand Hussain Talib, author and the Valley’s renowned columnist.
The trail of pictures is long and frequent as if everyone wants to be the winner of an unannounced competition. Several people have carved out huge animals, which have become a source of attraction for locals.
"Kashmir has a tradition of making snowmen. It is a ritual to celebrate the much-awaited snowfall for tourists and locals alike," said Naseer Ahmad, write of graphic novel ‘Kashmir Pending’.
Several people have come up with the larger than life size sculptures. At Srinagar’s tourist hub Boulevard, salesmen have come up with huge snowmen on the banks of the Dal Lake to attract tourists. Kashmir is expecting another round of snowfall around January 8.
