THE TWO-DAY music festival, organised by Mrudula Smriti Sansthan and Sadhna Music College began on Thursday evening at the cultural hall of Mulla Ramoji Bhawan.
The festival celebrating the annual function of Sadhna Music College festival kicked off with the disciples presenting the Ganesh Vandana. This was followed by two guest presentations by Dhrupad vocalist Kamlesh Tiwari and noted flutist Abhay Phagre.
Tiwari’s recital took off with ‘Raag Bhopali’. The immense depth and thoughtfulness in his ‘Alaap’ represented his strong vocal timbre and mastery over the melodious notes. ‘Aalaap Jhod Jhala’ intertwined with a beautiful composition called ‘Tu hi Surya, Tu hi chandra, Tu hi pawan, Tu hi agan (Chautaal) regaled the listeners.
His second in Sur Taal saw the outflow of a devotional sonnet based on Ganesh Vandana. Tiwari ended his rendition with Raag ‘Maal Kaunsh’ (also in Sur Taal) invocating Lord Shiva with rich lyrical content (‘Shankar Girija pati…parvati patishwar’). Ravi Shankar Dwivedi and Anugrah Tiwari accompanied him on Pakhawaj and Taanpura respectively.
The programme closed with the harmonic progressions of Phagre. His brilliant rendition on the flute was suitably complimented by Chandrahas on tabla.
Earlier in the evening, chief guest and former chairman of the Sadguru Nagrik Sahakari Bank GL Paradkar lit the inaugural lamp and paid floral tributes to late Mrudula Khandekar, former principal of Sadhna Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.
Special guest and eminent tabla percussionist Kiran Deshpande addressed the audience and lauded the efforts of the institution for having carried the musical heritage for 35 long years without any government aid.

Despite a limited audience the musical show went down well with the music lovers who began pouring in the late hours. On Friday, noted classical vocalist of Goa Alka Deo Marulkar will perform. She will be accompanied on Tabla by Pt Kiran Deshpandey and on harmonium by Ustad Zameer Hussain Khan.
