The Andhra Pradesh secretary in the Water Resources department, J. Harinarayanan informed Orissa's Chief Secretary P K Mohanty today that the construction work had been stopped, the sources said.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had spoken to his AP counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu over telephone yesterday urging him to stop the construction as it would result in flooding of large areas in the upper catchment areas of the river in Orissa.

Patnaik also reminded Naidu about the decision taken on May 11, 1982 for official level consultation before taking action either on flood control or any construction to protect river embankments on either side.
