MINISTER OF State for Trade Tax and Registration Sanjay Garg today shot off his resignation to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in protest against “police atrocities on the people” during the first phase of local bodies election in Saharanpur held on October 28.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Garg said he had left Saharanpur on the polling day on the instructions of state election commission.
He said in his absence the local police resorted to atrocities on the members of the minority community, disturbing polling in some areas. The minister had been supporting the Samajwadi Party candidate Imran Masood for chairmanship.
At least three dozen people were injured in police lathicharge, he said adding some of them had to be referred to PGI Chandigarh.
Garg said the district administration in collusion with BJP-RSS resorted to large-scale irregularities in the election. He said the BJP people forced closure of a polling station at four am and did not allow people of the minority community to vote. He said the administration also supported the saffron brigade during the polling.
He said the police created disturbances only in minority community areas. “Under the prevailing situation when the administration is busy terrorizing the people, it is not possible for him to continue as minister,” said Garg, who has faxed his resignation letter to the chief minister. He, however, said he would continue to be in the party.

Pointing out that he had apprised the chief minister of the prevailing situation in the city, Garg said he would not take back his resignation.
