Anti-nuke row: Kudankulam remains on the edge

Angry villagers have blocked all roads leading to the tiny fishing hamlet of Idanthikarai, 30 km from Kanyakumari. The village is the epicentre of the movement against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant here. Ramesh Babu reports.

Angry villagers have blocked all roads leading to the tiny fishing hamlet of Idanthikarai, 30 km from Kanyakumari. The village is the epicentre of the movement against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant here.

Fearing reprisals, policemen have been kept out of the village but have ringed around it to prevent people from coming in.

An easy calm prevailed in the area at night. Earlier, SP Udayakumar of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, who is leading the protests against the power plant, made a dramatic appearance at the venue. He announced that he would surrender before the police but emotionally charged protestors whisked him away by boat, saying they wouldn’t let that happen.
