Stressing that the modernisation of the armed forces was a key priority for the government, defence minister AK Antony said: "There's peace in the neighbourhood and we are striving to improving ties but we cannot afford to be complacent."

Referring to military modernisation, Antony said war could only be prevented by a strong deterrent. He said providing modern weapon systems to the armed forces posed fresh challenges for the scientific community, defence public sector undertakings and the economy.

India will be making military acquisitions worth over $24 billion during the 11th Plan period (2007-12). Over 500 firms drawn from more than 30 countries are showcasing their capabilities at Aero India with many of them eyeing the opportunities in the great Indian arms bazaar. Antony said, "Aero India is the right forum to explore business opportunities and facilitate joint ventures for mutual benefit."
