AR wins 7th national karate championship

Assam Rifles won the 7th National Karate-do Championship that was held at the Doon Sports Academy Stadium in Dehradun from May 6-8.

Assam Rifles won the 7th National Karate-do Championship that was held at the Doon Sports Academy Stadium in Dehradun from May 6-8.

The team from the Directorate General Assam Rifles (DGAR) almost made a clean sweep, bagging seven gold medals and a bronze in the event featuring 15 teams including Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu.

The DGAR gold medalists in the Kumete form were rifleman Vanlalngheta (50kg), lance havaldar T Kiran Meitei (55kg), lance havaldar K Dinesh Meitei (60kg), rifleman PP Chavan (65kg), lance havaldar Sanjeev Kumar (under 75kg) and rifleman L Manaoton Singh (over 75kg).

Rifleman A Rajesh Singh won the individual gold in the Kata form, a modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese ‘shu ha ri’ style. Teams from Punjab and Haryana bagged the silver and bronze medals.

Assam Rifles’ director-general, Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy, congratulated the team.
