DEMAND FOR ample and clean water in the Ganga is being raised in several quarters so that bathing can take place in the Ardh Kumbh scheduled to start in January 2007.
Jai Shiv Sena has announced to go on the warpath soon if remedial measures are not taken by the government and the district administration in this regard.
National president of the Sena Onkar Nath Tripathi and Akhada Parishad spokesperson Ramanand Puri held a joint meeting here to discuss the issue. Both have threatened that without sufficient and clean water in the Ganga, there is no question of sants participating in the Ardh Kumbh here. Both expressed concerned over the dirty and stinking water in the Ganga.
Puri reminded the government that the sadhu fraternity had refused to take a holy dip in Magh Mela this year due to the government’s callousness to check pollution in the Ganga, the water of which, they said was no longer fit for rituals.
A meeting of sants would be held in Kanpur on March 29 to chalk out the future course of action in this regard, they said and added that the work done so far in cleaning up the river was not satisfactory.
