Speaking at the National Defence Academy (NDA), his alma mater, Singh said there was no misunderstanding between him and the defence ministry.

"There is no misunderstanding between us and the ministry of defence. We have a raksha mantri (AK Antony) who is very clear-headed and (supportive of) the armed forces," Singh said after reviewing the passing-out parade of the NDA cadets, something that he was part of 46 years ago.

General Singh was at the centre of various controversies such as his confidential letter to the Prime Minister on defence preparedness being leaked to the media, confrontation with the government over his date of birth or allegations of corruption in weapons purchases.

Singh said, "Certain controversies were created, certain controversies erupted, certain controversies can be ascribed to my dear media friends who see a ghost behind every bush."
