Army has launched massive relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Army has launched massive relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan and have evacuated hundreds of people in the two affected states.

Army columns and Engineer Task Force deployed in Barmer District of Rajasthan have been derequisitioned and an Engineer Task Force deployed at Utarlai for rescue operation, an official release said on Sunday night.

A total of 3,612 people have been evacuated and 76,874 food packets distributed in Barmer and Jaisalmer districts, which are still water-logged.

Though all rivers in the state are flowing below danger level, people from 30-35 villages in the two districts are staying on higher sandunes or in relief camps.

In Barmer district, Kawas and Malba villages and some hamlets are still submerged under 10-15 feet water.

The Barmer-Jaisalmer National Highway has been breached/damaged at several places and road movement disrupted. 58 deaths in Barmer district have been reported in the last 4-5 days.

While MI-17 Helicopters are carrying out flood relief operations at Utarlai, Navy has deployed diving teams in Malwa Village for rescue operations which has so far recovered 10 dead bodies.
