Self-styled godman Asaram, lodged in Jodhpur jail in connection with sexual assault on a minor girl, approached Rajasthan high court again for bail on Wednesday.

The HC had denied him bail in September. A district court had rejected his bail application twice, in September and November.

Asaram’s counsel filed the fresh bail petition before the bench of justice Nirmaljeet Kaur, who ordered the listing of the petition on Thursday.

On the request of Asaram’s counsel, justice Kaur adjourned the hearing of a revision petition filed by Asaram and others against taking cognisance of the police chargesheet in the district and sessions court (Jodhpur district) till January 3.

Hearing of the revision petitions filed by Asaram, his aide Shiva and hostel warden Shilpi was scheduled for the day, but the godman’s counsel Pradeep Choudhary urged the HC for an adjournment, saying he wanted to argue at length.

Additional advocate general Anand Purohit and the victim’s lawyer Manish Vyas opposed the adjournment plea, saying Asaram’s counsel was delaying argument in the district court on account of the revision petition despite the HC order for a regular hearing of the case.

The Jodhpur police had filed a chargesheet against him on November 6 and the district court has already taken cognisance of it.

Asaram undergoes therapy for neuropathic disorder

Asaram underwent ‘Panchkarma’ and ‘Sirodhara’ therapy for treatment of a neuropathic disorder, trigeminal neuralgia, at Dr S Radhakrishnan Rajasthan Ayurved University’s hospital in Karwad village, around 40 km from Jodhpur.

The disorder is characterised by episodes of intense pain in the face.

He was taken amid tight security from Jodhpur jail in the morning and underwent treatment for more than two hours.

“The treatment was not possible at the jail dispensary, so we had suggested to the jail authorities to bring the patient to our hospital,” a university official who did not want to be named said.
