Union Minister of state for Home Swami Chinmayananda in a letter to Union minister of state for Water resources Bijoya Chakravarty has assured that steps will be taken soon to strengthen the River Police to effectively tackle along the long Indo-Bangladesh riverine border.

Chakravarty had urged the home ministry to strengthen the organisation by taking effective measures such as better and constant monitoring of river routes by the river police, improvement in infrastructural facilities and others.

"Due to poor monitoring and patrolling of river routes, infiltration from across the border has become very easy and a routine matter", Chakravarty had pointed out.

The River Police Organisation under the administrative control of the Assam government has a very low strength with only ten personnel for every three districts, the sources quoted Chakravrty as having said.
