Assam to be promoted as cultural destination

Assam Government on Tuesday announced a policy for preservation and promotion of culture of ethnic and indigenous tribes and communities in the state.

Announcing the policy in Guwahati, Cultural Affairs minister Hemoprova Saikia said it was aimed at promoting the state as a cultural destination, besides preserving and protecting cultures of different ethnic groups, monuments and historical sites.

Preservation and promotion of the state's unique Satriya culture, music, dance, acting and fine arts and their promotion as prospective employment avenues would be the focus of the cultural policy, Dr Saikia added.

The policy was also aimed at strengthening cultural and emotional bonds among the people within and outside the state.

He announced that two multi-purpose cultural complexes would be set up at Jyoti Chitrabon Film Studio Complex here and at Nazira in Sivasagar district at a cost of Rs 2 crore each.

About 90 per cent of the total expenditure would be provided by the Centre and the rest borne by the state, she added.

An industrial estate for the state's entertainment industry would be set up at Jyoti Chitrabon while a 300-seater auditorium would be inaugurated at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra here on January 17 on the occasion of Silpi Divas.

The state government had earlier provided Rs 25 lakh each for preservation of Vaishnavite Satras at Barpeta, Madhupur and Barduwa.

An art gallery would be set up at Rabindra Bhawan here at the cost of Rs 20 lakh.

A film archive would also be set up with funds from MP Local Area Development scheme of Kirip Chalia, Guwahati MP.
