The bus, with around 60 passengers, was coming to Dhaka from Manikganj, 90 km away in the country's northwest.

Rescuers said they had recovered 14 bodies from the ditch. Six critically injured people died after they were taken to hospital.

Police said the bus met with the accident only a few kilometres away from Dhaka.

Unusually heavy fog has disrupted air, rail and river communications across the country over the past week. There was a huge rush of passengers due to the holidays for the Muslim festival Eid-ul-Azha celebrated on Wednesday.

The dense fog had led to several other accidents in the past three days during the holiday rush with at least 28 people killed and 335 injured.
