The Rahmans cut the cake and burst crackers on the street outside their home to celebrate the musician’s double-win at the Grammys in Los Angeles.

Last February, the family got their first taste of global acclaim when Rahman won two Oscars — for best original score (for Slumdog Millionaire) and best original song (Jai Ho).

“I am very happy once again,” said Rahman’s sister Fathima. “He called my mother at 3 am and informed [us].”

Winning awards is “a way of life” for Rahman, added the composer’s other sister, Rehanna. “...His hard work and focus have won.”

“It’s a good start to the year,” she said.

“It was Rahman's birthday on Jan 6 and now he wins Grammys,” Rehanna said.

Chennai joined in the celebration too, with fans distributing sweets across the city, including at Rahman’s AM Studios in Kodambakkam.

Rahman’s work on Slumdog Millionaire — the rags-to-riches blockbuster directed by Danny Boyle — has won the composer a number of global awards, including a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award, a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe.
