Nunulal Marandi, the younger brother of former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi, today escaped a bid on his life by the Maoists in the district, police said in Giridih.

Nunulal was inaugurating a campaign office of a Zila Parishad candidate for the ongoing panchayat elections at Chatro bazar under Deori police station when about six Maoists opened fire, they said.

The retaliatory fire by his bodyguards checked the ultras from advancing and enabled Nunulal to leave the spot unharmed.
Nunulal, who is in the hit list of the CPI (Maoist), had escaped an earlier bid when the ultras attacked him at a programme at Chilkhari, killing about twenty villagers including Babulal Marandi's son Anup about three years ago.
