As the world observes yet another 'No Tobacco Day' on Wednesday, a number of measures like strong enforcement of legislation by Government, ban on sale of cigarettes to minors, regular increase in prices of tobacco and subsidies for smoke cessation clinics are required to curb smoking, they say.

An anti-smoking campaign can reduce the overall mortality risk of a person. The risk of heart attack begin to decline within a day of quitting smoking, experts claim.

Despite increased public awareness about harmful effects of smoking and existence of legislation, one person dies every 10 seconds in the world owing to tobacco use.

If WHO predictions are anything to go by, then more than one billion people will die from tobacco related causes during this century.

Those who consume tobacco are not the only ones exposed to its negative effects.

Millions of people, including one half of the world's children, are exposed to second hand tobacco smoke, also known as passive smoking.

There is conclusive evidence linking passive smoking to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and other types of cancer, say experts.
