As part of their annual charity drive, 2,500 students of St Francis School contributed Rs 39,460 to facilitate the release of prisoners who were convicted of minor offices and had completed their jail term but were still lodged in jail as they couldn’t afford to pay the fine.

“This was a new idea that struck me after reading an article in the newspaper... It was a voluntary campaign wherein we didn’t force anyone to donate for the cause,” said Sister Lismin, principal of the school.

“It feels great to be a part of an initiative through which we have given these people a chance to begin life anew,” said Akshat, a Class 12 student, adding that some students even donated a portion of their pocket money for the same.

“Nobody wants to spend his or her life in jail. These prisoners are lucky that they will get to spend this Christmas with their kin,” said district jail superintendent DR Maurya.
