A 16-year-old gang rape victim died in Kolkata on the last day of 2013. The teen survived the gang rape on October 26, but died of threats and taunts by the accused and their associates thereafter that forced her to set herself on fire on December 23.

The daughter of a taxi driver, who had shifted from Bihar in July with his family, was gang raped a few metres away from her residence at Madhyamgram on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. Unable to bear the humiliation, the family shifted to near the airport.

But the threats and jibes by the accused and their associates continued, forcing the girl to attempt suicide.

Doctors at RG Kar said the girl died due to multiple organ failure and infection as a result of the burns.

The victim’s father, meanwhile, lodged a police complaint against chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who holds the health portfolio, and the superintendent of R G Kar Hospital for causing her daughter’s death due to medical negligence. “My daughter was left unattended by hospital staff and there were several irregularities in her medication,” the father said.

Earlier, Citu had alleged negligence in treatment and demanded the victim be shifted to another hospital.

The Madhyamgram victim’s death is a slap on the face of Kolkata police which failed to protect the victim despite making a few arrests.
