Karnataka home minister KJ George on Thursday lashed out at the media saying the reportage on the recent cases of sexual abuse of children has been "sensationalist" and aimed at generating Television Rating Points (TRPs).
George's outburst comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a series of agitations demanding his resignation for failing to control rapes of children on school campus.
Speaking to reporters he said, "Nowadays this (rape) is the only news you are reporting. To increase TRPs you are playing only this kind of news. There's also so much good news, why don't you play that?".
"Now you all (media) are branding Bengaluru city as rape city. Point out the people who have committed the crime, talk about them. Why are you generalising? Bring all kinds of crime to light... We will appreciate that. Don't sensationalise every single incident," he said.
Seeking to put matters in perspective, he later told HT, "What is the population of Karnataka? How many such incidents have happened? It is not like these cases are happening on the streets. They are happening within the four walls of the school. Bengaluru is not rape city."
He said the state government has taken proper action in each of the cases that were reported adding that ensuring the safety of children within their premises is the primary responsibility of the schools.
