Arrested IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife Shweta Bhatt has written again to union home minister P Chidambaram, accusing the Gujarat Police of treating her husband like a “terrorist”.
She enclosed a CD, purportedly containing footage of Bhatt being kept in a filthy room with hardened criminals. Claiming insiders had provided her with the CD, Shweta said Bhatt wasn’t being given food or water in the Crime Branch lock-up.
Bhatt, who had accused Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi of complicity in the communal riots in the state in 2002, was arrested on September 30.
The arrest was based on an FIR by a constable, KD Pant, accusing Bhatt of forcing him to sign a false affidavit regarding a meeting called by Modi on February 27, 2002, after the Godhra carnage.
Bhatt, in an affidavit in the SC in April, alleged that Modi had asked top police officials present at the meeting to allow the majority community to vent their anger against Muslims.
Three days before his arrest, Bhatt had filed another affidavit in the Gujarat HC cumentary evidence regarding the role of some politicians and police officers in the murder of former state minister Haren Pandya.
In her letter, written on Wednesday, Shweta Bhatt also claimed that the authorities were tapping her phones. The state government is using all possible ways to deny bail to her husband, she said.

{{/usCountry}}Expressing apprehensions about more false cases being “concocted” against Bhatt, Shweta wrote: “I am terribly concerned about the life and liberty of my husband.”
On October 3, she had written to Chidambaram, alleging that the “vindictive” administration was out to finish Bhatt and expressed apprehensions about the safety of the family.
