WITH 56 gold medals in its kitty, Bhopal has taken a big lead in the State Olympic Games being organised by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department at Tatya Tope Stadium. Indore is distant second with 26 gold medals.
There is a close fight for the third and fourth positions. Jabalpur is placed third place with 16 gold while Ujjain is fourth with 12 gold medals.
Bhopal team maintained the lead on Tuesday, the third day, by registering wins in most of the events. The outstanding performance by the Capital’s players could be gauged from the fact that they won 21 gold medal in 38 different events organised on Tuesday. Judo, gymnastics, weightlifting and wrestling were organised on the third day.
Once again, Bhopal team dominated the judo event, winning six gold medals. The gold medal winners include Ashutosh Singh (66 kg), Awadh (73 kg), Yogesh Mishra (81 kg), Jitendra Yadav (90 kg), Prahalad (open category) and Shailendra Yadav (74 kg). Indore won three gold medals.
Bhopal faced tough fight from Ujjain in the gymnastics event. Except Shashwat Patel of Bhopal, others failed to impress. Bhopal claimed gold in just three events while Ujjain won five.

{{/usCountry}}In the track and field, Sudhir Kumar of Bhopal stood first in the hammer throw event. He threw hammer to a distance of 42.49 m. Jayesh Kumar had to stay content with the second position after throwing hammer to a distance of 41.03 m.
The second gold was won by Sudha Sharma in the 10,000-m race.
Firoz came first in the women’s hammer throw event. Satpal Paliya of Bhopal claimed gold for the team in the 84 kg category of wrestling category.
Players from distant areas make a mark
THE STATE Olympic Games have given opportunity to the players like Monika of Narsinghpur and Radha of Pandhari village of Itarsi district to demonstrate their talent. The event witnessed number of great performances from players of remote areas. “A single medal from any player of the remote areas will solve our purpose of organising the meet. This is a beginning”, said Director Sports Sanjay Chaudhary.
Twins draw attention
ONCE AGAIN, the identical twin sisters Firoz and Afroz of Ratlam were centre of attraction at the State Olympic Games. The two sisters visited the Tatya Tope Stadium for the second time. Last time they had participated in the national women sports meet. Firoz won gold in the hammer throw category.
