BHU campus turns into mini-India

THE CAMPUS of prestigious Banaras Hindu University has turned into a virtual mini India, courtesy All India Talent Promotion Campaign which has brought students from various parts of the country.

THE CAMPUS of prestigious Banaras Hindu University has turned into a virtual mini India, courtesy All India Talent Promotion Campaign which has brought students from various parts of the country.

A total of 100 students from all eight regions of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti are camping in BHU to participate in a free preparatory coaching camp for Joint Engineering Examination-2007. The camp got underway on Monday.

Out of these 100 students including 19 girls, nine belong to Shillong region, 11 to Jaipur region, around 11 to Chandigarh, 15 to Pune, around 12 to Patna, 15 to Lucknow, 11 to Hyderabad and 15 to Bhopal region.

Talking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, secretary of All India Talent Promotion Campaign and an alumni of IT-BHU, Shashank Chaturvedi said that the main aim of this campaign was to bring the talented students of rural India into the mainstream of the society.

He added that similar schemes had been launched for the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya who would be imparted training through distance learning programme. “Besides, we are also contemplating to launch such schemes to enhance representation of poor students in Medical, Law and Management courses”, he said.

Expressing concern over poor representation of rural talent in IIT-JEE, former in-charge of Training and Placement Cell of IT-BHU, Prof BB Bansal said that only 30 percent students of rural India, where more than 70 population of the country lived, got through IIT-JEE examination in the year 2006.

Prof Bansal said that the this campaign had been launched to enhance representation of poor but talented students in IIT-JEE. He said that the students studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti included 77 percent from villages, 34 percent were female and 47 percent SC/ST.
