At a press conference in Bhopal yesterday, Rahul Gandhi described the RSS as "fanatical", saying it was no different from banned terror outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and said that both hold "fundamentalist" views.

Led by local BJP leader Ashok Kamsal, the activists tried to take out a demonstration but were dispersed by police.

Meanwhile, ABVP and Congress activists clashed in Luxor area near Roorkee over the same issue.

The incident took place when the ABVP activists burnt an effigy of Gandhi shouted slogans against him at Balawala Tiraha area, and a group of Congress workers reached the spot and tried to stop them from doing so, police said.

In the scuffle, some youths received minor injuries. Later, police intervened and controlled the situation.

ABVP members lodged an FIR against some Congress workers in this connection. They said they were peacefully protesting against Gandhi's controversial remarks against RSS when they were beaten up by Congress workers.
