The BJP said it would go ahead with its rally in front of Victoria House in Kolkata, to be addressed by party national president Amit Shah on November 30, despite the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and West Bengal Fire Services Department refusal to allow it.
On Thursday, BJP was denied permission by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and West Bengal Fire Services Department to hold the rally in front of Victoria House. Kolkata Police had denied permission earlier.
“We are not stunned or shocked by the KMC and fire services department’s decision. We always knew that they would deny us the permission to hold the rally. We are not going to back out, we will hold the rally in the same venue,” said BJP state president Rahul Sinha.
BJP has asked its workers from different parts of Bengal to be present near Victoria House for the rally by 11.30 am on Sunday.
The BJP hit out at the Mamata Banerjee government after the refusal. BJP’s in-charge for West Bengal Sidharth Nath Singh said Banerjee was scared to allow BJP to hold the rally beside Victoria House. “She doesn’t believe in a democratic and peaceful political fight as her approach is anarchist...the reasons given are frivolous despite court directions to Kolkata Municipal Corporation of getting their issues resolved with the state unit of BJP,” Singh said.
Claiming that the rally was announced more than a month back, Singh said the BJP state unit had moved an application to the Kolkata police which was duly accepted and stamped. “The question is who from behind is directing the Kolkata police for not allowing BJP to hold Amit Shah’s rally at the same venue where Mamata Banerjee has held rallies in the past and as recent as July 21, 2014?” Singh asked.
