BJP candidate for the reserved constituency, R Murugan joined AIADMK on Thursday last, when he went straight to the ruling party office at Avanashi and adorned the local functionaries of the ruling party with shawls.

Murugan was a general council member of the BJP and secretary of SC/ST wing of the party.

A woman candidate is contesting on behalf of AIADMK from the constituency.

Defending the candidate's action, his supporters say that BJP had announced the candidature of Murugan.

However, the party, a couple of days ago, reportedly decided not to field him.

The reported move prompted Murugan to leave the party and join AIADMK, so that he could "teach a lesson BJP", they said.

Murugan, a councillor of district panchayat, was not immediately available for comments, as he was busy campaigning.
