Mukesh Gupta and his team of four are looking for that one line that knocks the wind out of the opposition. They are the BJP’s creative crew, tasked with coining slogans — one-liners that will be strong enough to win at least the duel of slogans with the Congress.
“We have been collecting and scanning articles from newspapers and magazines for more than six months now. It gives us a fair idea about the issues at stake,” says Gupta, associated with BJP for more than two decades now.
A few weeks ago, the party hierarchy briefed them on what was wanted of the slogans. “The focus has to be on the common man, what affects him and his life. Then, a specific constituency could have a specific problem. So, we coin a slogan on that,” Gupta says.
The Congress has been at it too, looking for slogans to silence the BJP’s. DPCC vice-president and chairman of the Congress’s publicity committee, Vishwa Bandhu Gupta, says the aim is to find that magical slogan with not more than three to four words; if possible, even less.
“Slogans like ‘garibi hatao’ and ‘Bharat chhodo’ are etched in everyone’s minds. Our effort is to replicate such slogans that hit the point,” Bandhu says.

{{/usCountry}}He says party workers at all levels are involved in creating slogans. “The slogans are sent to me. We send it to senior party members like Ahmed Patel, in case the slogans need to be changed or improved.”
Once a slogan catches the fancy of party seniors, it is flashed across to workers.
