A BJP worker has claimed that he had tried to save Professor H S Sabharwal from assailants, but said he was worried that the investigating agency might implicate him in the case.
A BJP worker has claimed that he had tried to save Professor H S Sabharwal from assailants, but said he was worried that the investigating agency might implicate him in the case.
College peon Komal Singh Sengar, who had filed the FIR of the assault leading to the death of the professor, disclosed before the media that one Sanwar Patel had tried to save Sabharawal.
When contacted, Sanwar Patel told HT, “I saw Sir falling down and the mob thrashing him. I pulled off some of the assailants and assisted Sir and he asked why the students were beating him. I replied said that I was there and nobody would touch him. He (Sabharwal) got up and walked to the gate and the peon and others assisted him to the chair.”
Patel added that returned home, as he had not anticipated that Sabharwal could die due to the attack. Patel, being an
eyewitness, could play significant role in solving the case, but the CID has not yet contacted him. He assured that he would extend full cooperation to the police.
When asked about the names of ABVP activists who attacked the professor, Sanwar played it safe and replied that saving the professor had seemed more important than looking at the assailants.
This though Patel could have easily identified the youths, as he is closely associated with student politics. However, sources said CID was working on the angle as to whether Patel had tried to protect the professor or was part of the assailants.
The question doing the rounds was why Patel had left the spot if he had tried to help the professor. Moreover, disclosure of Patel’s role as a saviour by Komal Singh after six days has put his own (Komal Singh’s) version under doubt.
