"The Samajwadi Party's fast growing mass support base has unnerved the BJP and it is therefore spreading rumours to confuse the voters at the time of elections," he said addressing an election rally here.

Yadav exuded confidence that the people of the state were aware of the BJP's gameplan and had full confidence in the policies and programmes being pursued by the Samajwadi Party.

Referring to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's statement that there were ideological similarities between the BJP an the SP, Yadav invited him to join the SP if he (Vajpayee) was impressed by its policies and programmes.

"The Samajwadi party will welcome Vajpayee, who is often at the receiving end of Bajrang Dal and RSS ire," Yadav said.

"The poor women are still dying for sarees worth rupees 20," he said referring to the stampede during the birthday celebrations of senior BJP leaders Lalji Tandon which had claimed the lives of 22 women in Lucknow earlier this month.

Yadav also spoke at length about the achievements of his government.
