Over 2,000 members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national council will meet on Saturday to ratify Amit Shah's appointment as the new party president.

Shah took over from Rajnath Singh, now Union home minister, as the BJP president on July 9 after a decision to this effect was taken by the BJP's parliamentary board -- party's highest decision making body.

The national council includes parliamentarians, chief ministers and legislators of all states as well as national and state party office bearers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give the concluding remarks at the meeting. Party leaders say the PM is expected to lay focus on preparedness for the forthcoming assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir. The BJP is not in power in any of these states and is expecting to form government in at least three of them.

Modi, a party leader said, may even give a signal to warring leaders of these states to remain united for ensuring a victory. The BJP is unlikely to project CM candidates in these states.

Shah is expected to announce a new team of national office bearers in the next couple of days. The team announced by Shah is expected to be packed with younger faces.
