Rajendra Dhurve, 11, and Kamal Bhamore, 10 — both visually challenged — have just finished typing the Braille version of President A P J Abdul Kalam's autobiography Wings of Fire.
City-based NGO Arushi is bringing out the Braille version of the book by Rajendra and Kamal, students of Class VI at Scholar's Home school in the Madhya Pradesh capital. Rajendra’s father is a gardener and mother a domestic help.
Kamal’s father is a watchman and his mother too works as a domestic help. According to their teacher Sapna Gupta, who also read out the book to them, "The actual version of the book was quite bulky and in four volumes.
But lyricist Gulzar translated it into Hindi under the title Parwaaz with 81 pages. The children have done the Braille version of the shortened book." The Braille typing took three months, she added.
The NGO had also done the Braille version of the original, which was released by Kalam himself. Gupta hoped that Kalam would release the Braille version of his book, a view echoed by both the boys.
Regarding Kalam as their role model, the boys want to become military scientists when they grow up. "We want to develop a satellite to predict tsunamis and earthquakes,” they said.
