THE BHOPAL Municipal Corporation (BMC) today removed water chestnut (singhara) crop from the Upper Lake. The singhara cultivation is being illegally carried out in Upper Lake for the past many years despite the State Government banning singhara cultivation in water bodies being used for the drinking purpose.
A team of 80 employees removed singhara crop from the Upper Lake in Khanu Gaon area. BMC Additional Commissioner K K Singh, who led the team, informed that pesticides and fertilisers were being used for the singhara cultivation, resulting in pollution in Upper Lake’s water. The drive was also conducted on Friday.
According to information, three BMC departments, including Garden Section, Lake Conservation Cell and Anti-encroachment Cell, carried out the drive.
The singhara cultivation was removed from eight-km long area in Karbala and Khanugaon. Lake Conservation Cell in-charge RB Rai and other officials were also present.
